The visible difference is the join
LCD walls tile complete flat panels. Even narrow-bezel models leave a grid through the image. Planar’s VM55MX-M2 specification lists a 0.88 mm tiled bezel width, 55-inch Full HD panels, 700-nit brightness and 24/7 operation (Planar specifications). Those figures apply to that model. Other LCD panels differ.
Direct-view LED builds the image from LED modules and cabinets, so there is no glass-panel bezel through the picture. Cabinet or module boundaries can still show if mechanical alignment or calibration is poor. Inspect a lit wall and dark test images rather than assuming “seamless” means invisible assembly.

Resolution changes the comparison
An LCD panel has a stated native resolution. An LED wall’s total pixels come from its physical dimensions divided by pixel pitch. Ask both bidders for the final active dimensions, native canvas and the processor’s mapping plan. A huge LED wall can have fewer pixels than a smaller LCD array if its pitch is coarse.
Test spreadsheets, maps and fine text at the nearest workstation. For public signage, test the actual creative at normal distance. More pixels add little value if viewers stand too far away to resolve them.
Price the complete system
LCD budgeting should include displays, mounts, trim, controller, signal distribution, alignment, cabling and a plan for replacing a panel with a later production unit. LED budgeting should include cabinets, processor, structure, power distribution, spare modules, calibration, installation and access.
Samsung describes LED total cost as the sign, installation, content management and maintenance (Samsung). Apply the same whole-system discipline to LCD. Compare warranty response, spare strategy, energy assumptions and planned service life rather than purchase invoices alone.
