Pitch controls pixel density
Pixel pitch measures the distance between neighbouring pixel centres. Planar explains that pitch directly determines pixel density and that density influences recommended viewing distance (Planar). On two walls with the same physical dimensions, the smaller-pitch wall has more pixels.
The benefit depends on where people stand. Planar’s MGP brochure describes its indoor fine-pitch range as supporting viewing distances as close as 5 ft (1.5 m), a product-family claim rather than a rule for every display (Planar MGP). Your team should view its own content on the offered product at the site distance.
Where the extra cost goes
Smaller pitch places more LED packages and driver circuitry in each square metre. Manufacturing tolerances tighten, heat is concentrated differently, and a fixed wall contains more pixels for the processor to drive. These are selection tendencies. Environment, cabinet design and product quality can reverse a simplistic category comparison.
Calculate the canvas before choosing
Ask the bidder for cabinet resolution, cabinet count and the resulting total width × height in pixels. Confirm that this canvas suits the content sources. Scaling a 4K source does not make a lower-resolution wall display 4K detail; the processor maps the source into the physical pixel canvas.
Check aspect ratio too. Cabinet increments may produce a wall that is close to, but not exactly, 16:9. Decide whether to crop, letterbox or design content for the native canvas.
Test the products side by side
Use the same dimensions, content, room light and brightness. Include small text, dark gradients, skin tones and motion. Stand at the closest seat, the normal seat and the side angles. For camera use, record at the planned frame rate and shutter setting.
Then review service. Finer-pitch pixels can be more vulnerable to handling depending on package design. Ask how modules are removed, how replacement batches are calibrated, what spares ship with the wall and whether local technicians can perform the work.
Avoid two expensive mistakes
The first is buying by a distance formula without viewing the content. Formulae offer a shortlist, while people and content decide acceptability. The second is asking every supplier for “your best fine pitch.” Quotes may then cover different pitch, components, processing and scope.
Issue one schedule that fixes the maximum pitch, active dimensions, minimum pixel canvas, brightness range, service direction, inputs, camera requirement, spares and acceptance tests. Let bidders identify alternatives separately.
Does finer pitch always cost more?
Within a comparable product family and scope, it usually adds component density. Cross-brand quotes can differ for many other reasons, so match the bill of materials.
Can viewers see the difference?
That depends on distance, eyesight and content. A witnessed sample test is stronger evidence than a generic viewing-distance chart.
Is larger pitch lower quality?
It has fewer pixels at the same physical size. At a suitable viewing distance, it may meet the brief while reducing cost and system complexity.
