The construction difference
LG describes COB pixels as color chips mounted directly on the PCB and notes that the surface layering makes them durable. LG describes SMD pixels as packaged color devices mounted on the PCB surface and says SMD makes up the vast majority of indoor direct-view LED displays globally (LG).
Samsung’s technology guide says tight SMD pixel density leaves less black background visible, which can reduce contrast, and identifies COB as one of the manufacturing approaches developed for finer pitches (Samsung). Product design still matters: coating, package quality, calibration and processing can change the result within either category.

Claims such as “impact resistant,” “anti-glare” and “washable” need a named test, rating or care instruction. Ask how cleaning affects the surface and warranty.
Image quality needs a controlled comparison
View both candidates at the same physical size, pitch, resolution, input signal, brightness and room light. Use dark scenes, white backgrounds, skin tones, small text and slow gradients. Stand at the nearest and typical viewing positions. If cameras will record the wall, test the production camera at the intended frame rate and shutter.
Look for module boundaries, reflections, color shift off-axis and detail in dark content. Photographing two screens with automatic camera exposure can mislead because the camera changes settings between shots.
Service can outweigh the purchase difference
Ask a technician to demonstrate module removal, power-supply access and receiving-card replacement. Record the time, tools and clearance needed. Get the warranty workflow in writing: who diagnoses, who pays freight, whether the wall can remain operational and how replacements are calibrated.

Is COB always finer pitch than SMD?
