Quick answer
Measure the nearest position where image quality matters, identify the smallest text or detail viewers must resolve, and use those facts to shortlist pitches. Calculate the native pixel canvas for the proposed wall size, then view the real content on a full-size sample. Distance formulae can narrow the field, but they cannot capture eyesight, content, contrast or a buyer’s tolerance for visible pixel structure.
Why pitch matters
Pixel pitch is the centre-to-centre spacing of adjacent pixels, normally stated in millimetres. Smaller pitch puts more pixels into the same screen area. Planar describes pitch as the fundamental direct-view LED selection because it determines pixel density and influences recommended viewing distance (Planar).
Vendors use different criteria for “minimum,” “comfortable” and “optimal” distance. When a quote gives a viewing-distance number, ask for the formula or test behind it. Do not compare two unlabeled numbers as if they mean the same thing.
Use three distances, not one
Record:
- the closest normal viewer, such as a front-row seat or operator desk;
- the typical viewer, where most people spend time;
- the farthest viewer who must still read essential text.
The nearest position helps set pitch and visible pixel structure. The farthest position influences screen height, content size and sightlines. A wall can have a fine pitch and still fail if the text is designed too small for the back row.
Calculate the physical pixel canvas
For a first-pass calculation, divide screen width in millimetres by pitch in millimetres to estimate horizontal pixels. Do the same for height. The final order must use whole modules and cabinets, so ask the supplier for the exact cabinet map and resulting native resolution.
Illustrative arithmetic: a nominal 4,000 mm-wide surface at 2.5 mm pitch is approximately 1,600 pixels wide before cabinet rounding (4,000 ÷ 2.5). This is mathematics, not a product quotation or a promise that a 4 m cabinet layout is available. Use the supplier’s mechanical drawing for the purchasable size.

Planar states that its MGP indoor fine-pitch family supports viewing as close as 5 ft (1.5 m) (Planar MGP). That claim belongs to the named family. It does not establish 1.5 m as the minimum for every display with a similar pitch.
Run a useful sample test
Ask for the exact offered model and pitch, not a premium demonstration unit. Set the sample to the planned brightness and view it under comparable room light. Bring original content files and, where relevant, the actual camera. Inspect from each measured distance and from side seating.
Record which pitch the decision group accepts before prices are opened. That order reduces the chance that a low quote changes the visual requirement after the test.

Is the “one millimetre equals one metre” rule accurate?
It is a rough screening convention, not a universal quality threshold. Product design, content and viewer expectations vary. Use it only to choose samples for evaluation.
Does a 4K source require a 4K LED wall?
No. The processor can scale a source to the wall’s native canvas. Whether the reduced detail is acceptable depends on content and distance.
Can a coarser pitch save money?
It can reduce pixel density and hardware cost within a comparable family. Confirm that the resulting canvas still displays required text and imagery at every important seat.
